I didn’t know what to do.

I had put up with Shelly’s jumping and disobedient behavior for so long that it was something I just accepted because she was always so happy to see me, but now I was desperate.

I started looking for a dog behaviorist online.

That’s when I found…

Secrets To Dog Training

I Got Tired of Yelling at my Dog

I got so tired of yelling at my beautiful puppy and seeing the confused and hurt look in her eyes after she jumped up to say ‘Hi Daddy’ when I got home.

After so many years of it being OK, I  didn’t consider it bad dog behavior.

This wasn’t my puppy being an aggressive dog; it was just how we said ‘Hi’ to each other, every day.

It didn’t matter that my ‘puppy’ was a 90 lb Rottweiler coming at me full tilt, because I was (and still am) a 250 lb ‘Dog Catcher’ who can handle it.

This was not bad dog behavior or my dog being overly aggressive, this was expected behavior.

This was how we said ‘Hello!’…Rottweiler Style.

…but things have changed.

I Had a Dog Behavior Problem

I have two precious babies now and my puppy’s jumping and excitable behavior is not acceptable anymore.

What do I do?

I don’t want to get rid of my dog.

I love my dog.

I promised her I’d take care of her forever.

What do I do?

I Had A Problem

One that was affecting a very important part of my life, my relationship with the woman I love and my children’s safety.

Unfortunately, the source of that problem was the other most important thing in my life, my beautiful and wonderful puppy dog, the always amazing (and sometimes smelly) Shelly-bean.

…and that’s not really fair either, because the true source of her bad dog behavior lies with me.

I’m the one who neglected to correct her behavior when I knew she shouldn’t be jumping up and acting like she did.

I’m the one who failed to train my dog, but how do you teach an old dog new tricks?

Is it even possible?

I needed help and I needed it fast.

I needed the help of a dog behaviorist.

I Found A Dog Behaviorist

I’m not a very trusting soul when it comes to buying things like this online so I did a lot of looking around and I’m here to tell you, there are a lot of dog training sites to look at online.

When I came across Secrets To Dog Training the first time, it was just a name I jotted down on my growing list.

After a short time, I had been to quite a few dog training review sites and this Secrets to Dog Training kept popping up.

I now know the reason so many people were talking about it and I am so very glad I decided to give them a try.

My dog is not perfect, and I don’t think she ever will be, but the simple techniques Dan suggests have transformed my best friend into a dog I am so very proud of today.

Thanks Dan.

If I Had Only Turned to a Dog Behaviorist First

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

I wish I had known what a dog behaviorist was back then, but I didn’t.

So I did the best I could with what little I had.

My poor dog.

Not a Very Good Dog Trainer

I bought a book on dog training written by some ‘professional dog trainers’ who said they owned some dog obedience school and claimed to have trained and ‘groomed the behavior’ of many blue ribbon show dogs.

The book was on sale so I bought it.

It was supposed to be about training dogs and went over stuff about dog agility and crate training (whatever that is).

There were a lot of pictures with dogs on leashes and they looked like they were obeying and heeling, some were sitting and begging and a few were even shaking hands or paws or whatever.

I wasn’t going to ‘show’ my dog and Shelly was a Rottweiler, not a hunting dog.

She wasn’t a bird dog or a deer hound and I didn’t need my dog to retrieve anything for me so a lot of the topics covered in the book didn’t really apply to us, but it sure did want me to buy a lot of special collars and leashes and harnesses and DVD’s and other books written by the same guys.

It even came with an order form.

I Tried a Few of Their Techniques

I tried a few of their professional dog training techniques while walking Shelly around the neighborhood but apparently my $12 horse lead did not compare to the $40 or $50 retractable leash and collar combo they offered in the guide.

I could even have her name engraved on it for a nominal fee, that were suggested in the training manual, so not much dog training was accomplished.

Besides, that wasn’t the behavior I was having problems with.

She wouldn’t stop barking.

She never came when I called and an open gate was an invitation for her to run, run, run.

I think I mentioned somewhere that I weigh in at about 250 so not a whole lot of dog chasing was going on.
